Our Mission
Sequel has been the undergraduate literary journal of Simpson College since 1948. Each spring, we publish a new edition for the benefit of all students, faculty, and staff. We aim to serve as a channel through which their voices can be heard. Sequel appreciates creativity in all its forms, and welcomes submissions of all poetry, prose, non-fiction, and visual art. In order to make sure our journal remains accessible, alternative text will be provided with artwork and images.
Content in Sequel is provided by individuals and as such is not necessarily reflective of the opinions of Simpson College.
2025 Editorial Staff: August (Holly) Albertson, Sophia Harrington, Nayeli Mejia, Riley Tuzzio, and Ben Wilson
A Kindness Remembered
by Dennis Moore
Free scoops of ice cream served outside
for students who walk a campus that I once walked
showing my gratitude to this liberal arts college
for which I have a greater appreciation each year.
A simple yet kind gesture given on that day
came from three enthusiastic students who approached
thanking me and asking for a picture of us four –
a meaningful request with an unforgettable impact.
Meeting as strangers, leaving as friends
hoping our paths cross again at another time
even for a free scoop of ice cream.

Dennis Moore, September 10, 1950 – December 14, 2024
In December 2024, Sequel lost our close friend and supporter Dennis Moore. A 1972 Simpson alum, Dennis was instrumental in ensuring the journal’s continued production. We were honored to share some of his poetry in previous issues, just as we are to share his work now. We will always remember him as a partner in Sequel’s artistic mission.
